Mark your calendars for the best day of the year to take a stroll around Prospect Park. Grab a reusable tote bag and head out to admire some lovely gardens, browse some fabulous sales, and head home loaded with inspiration and treasures.

Past Yard Sales

Begun in 2014, Yard Sales Days continues as a volunteer effort typically held the weekend around the Summer Solstice in June. In 2022, Yard Sales teamed up with the neighborhood EcoTour. In 2021, Yard Sales teamed up with the Garden Walk and also the Home Tour to maximize on the foot traffic in the neighborhood that weekend. Locations of Yard Sales that participated were featured on a map available at local shops and at all sale sites. The event was canceled in 2020 due to the pandemic.

Past Tailgate Sales
In past years the Tailgate Sale was held in the Pratt School parking lot as an adjunct to the Yard Sales. This was a great option if you didn’t have a good place to set up a sale at home, or for folks who were renters or apartment dwellers who did not have a yard or garage to sell from like homeowners, or you just didn’t have enough stuff to justify setting it all up. Those participating in the tailgate sale brought their items to the Pratt parking lot, found a place to park, and then opened their trunks and tailgates and sold from there! It was a good idea to bring a small table or blanket to put your items out on, plus a chair to sit on.

TIPS FOR HOSTING A SALE:

Gather your sale items: All it takes is a few minutes a day. Just toss your yard sale items into a corner in your basement or garage — something you can do all year long!. Also start to collect boxes and bags for shoppers (although we will also encourage them to bring their own reusable totes or bags).
Organize and clean your items: Group similar items together and make sure everything is clean and in good condition. This makes it easier for buyers to browse.
Price items clearly: Use tags or stickers to mark prices individually or by box or per table (i.e., “everything on this table is $x.”) Consider using color-coded stickers for different price ranges.
Be ready to negotiate: People expect to haggle at garage sales, so be prepared to negotiate prices.
Have change ready: Make sure you have plenty of small bills and coins to make change for buyers.
Set up early: Give yourself plenty of time to set up your sale. Arrange items attractively to catch buyers' eyes.
Create a comfortable shopping environment: Provide shade, if possible, and have a place for people to sit if they need a break.
Post signs: We will post signs around the neighborhood the week before the sale, but it's also advantageous to make your own signs to post on your street or corner and at your location.
Have fun! Enjoy the process of meeting new people and finding new homes for your items. Invite a friend to sit with you, Play ambient music, and prepare some snacks and drinks in advance!
